COPPERSTATE WORKSHOPS
WILL GET YOU STARTED

New in the COPPERSTATE Workshops in 2008 will be a “Front Porch”.   Front Porch is a meeting place that is continuously manned by people that are knowledgeable in the art of aircraft homebuilding.  They are experience people who can answer most any question that you have concerning home built aircraft.  The background of the Front Porch staff are FAA licensed mechanics, Technical Consular, or fellow builders that have completed an airplane.

Want to build an airplane yourself?  Experimental really means "Amateur Built" for our organization.  Remember the words of Tim Allen, "If you didn't build it yourself, it's not really yours".

Are you are worried that your skills are not up to snuff?  Do you think that you have to be a professional mechanic to build an aircraft?  Well, if you're worried about it, then you qualify.  It’s the guys that don't worry about it that can get into trouble.   If you have a critical attitude toward quality, then you are qualified and trainable.

Each Workshop is lead by an experienced leader in the craft.  The Workshops and the leaders are an excellent way to get started learning a new skill.  You’ll be introduced to the materials, the knowledge base and the reference materials that you’ll need to continue your journey of self education.

Not every workshop has the same structure.  Each workshop leader is authorized to schedule and run the workshop as they see fit.  So get there early, talk the each leader, and make your own plan for the weekend.  You may also contact the leaders via email prior to the event.  The posted workshop schedule is only part of the time available to discuss things with the leaders.  You'll be able to get plenty of one-on-one time with each leader in between the scheduled meetings.

Please give the Workshop leaders your feedback, and also forward your comments to the Copperstate Workshop Chairman, Dave Wilcox.

Workshop Leader Biographies

Composites: Gary Hertzler
Builder of the VariEze composite aircraft that currently holds the CAFE closed course and straight line efficiency awards for weight class.  Gary manufactures high performance propellers for high speed Amateur Built aircraft.  You'll learn more than composite lay-up techniques with Gary.  He'll teach you that efficiently is a religion.  Just two sessions for composites, so plan ahead.  hertzler@yahoo.com

Sheet Metal: Doug Combs
Doug has restored and repaired Luscombe sheet metal aircraft for 38 years.  He is well known for his efforts in the preservation of Luscombe aircraft.    Doug has trained many sheet metal mechanics and organized the work of the Luscombe Endowment and its predecessor Luscombe Foundation since 1989.  Doug will demonstrate and coach participants in basic sheet metal tools, layout, forming, and riveting techniques.”  Advance scheduling for this seminar is recommended at 602-790-7240 or via  rivets@luscombe.org

Weight & Balance: Rick Reuland
Rick is an Aerospace engineer that has spent his career with engine installations.  He constructed an excellent LongEze.  Rick will get his participants hands on experience calculating weight and balance.  There’s more to it than adding three weights together.  Rick will be able to explain moments and ballast like only an engineer can and you’ll go away confident that you can do it yourself.  Rick is easy to understand.  rreuland@cox.net

Fabric: Murle Williams
